is blowing on the fire again!
We're playing at the Independent Amchair Theatre on the Thursday 1st of August, opening a run of monthly performances (1st Thursday of the month) at this hip venue, 135 Lower Main Road, Observatory
Our concert at Lady Milner's last month was a lot of fun, and we're looking forward to our first gig at the Armchair -- it'll be the first time a Big Band has performed at this regular live music venue, and the management has assured us that they're equally excited at the prospect.
We've included some new repertoire for this gig, and will be performing 2 sets.
Sticking to the plan of playing African standards and "original-ish" compositions, i.e. pieces composed and/or arranged by somebody who's hand we can shake, or who will at least reply to an email, new on the bill are 2 tunes by John Davies, stalwart trombonist from Johannesburg -- an arrangement of the Hank Mobley tune Funk in Deep Freeze, as well as one of John's own compositions Ultreya, a sultry swing groove, which has all the horn & reed sections playing layers of counterpoint, wiht the rhythm section taking care of the mood changes. There's also a new African classic from up-country: an arrangement of Reggie Msomi's Midnight Ska, an old mbakanga piece, Jo'burg style, probably from about 50 years ago!
Maybe we should call this gig JWBB does Egoli ...
We'll also feature some guest musicians, including Doug Armstrong (Moodphase 5, Honeymoon Suites, The Dynamics) who's coming to beef up the trumpet section for this gig. Doug is one of the young pro's (together with Lee Tomson, David Poole, etc) who have been kindly helping us out on occasion when all our guys haven't been available for rehearsals -- we like to show our appreciation by inviting them to guest with us at gigs from time to time.
The gig will start at 21h30, and continue till about 23h30. There will be a couvert charge of R15.
See you there!
PS. we'll be back at the Armchair on Thursday September 5.
