Thursday August 5, Acoustic Cafe, Muizenberg
Sunday August 8, Silvertree Restaurant, Kirstenbosch
The FMR Jazz Workshop Biggish Band has two concerts coming up this week. We will be performing at the Acoustic Cafe, Muizenberg on Thursday August 5, and at the Silvertree Restaurant, Kirstenbosch Sunday August 8.
On the setlist for both these outings will be our regular repertoire of indigenous Big Band Jazz, composed for us by the likes of Mertyn Barrow, David Ledbetter, Douglas Armstrong and Jannie 'Hanepoot' van Tonder, as well as some new arrangements of South African classics by Zakes Nkosi, Hugh Masekela, Dollar Brand, Chris McGregor, etc. Other than a healthy helping of truly South Africa sounds like Goema, Mbaqanga and jive music, you'll also hear some traditional Big Band swing, blues and latin rhythms.
The Acoustic Cafe is at 120 Main Rd, on the corner with Camp Rd (across the road from the shopping centre near the station). It has been a music venue for some years now, and has recently been revamped, with a firm focus on the music. The gig will start at 20h30 and entrance will be R20 (slightly more than R1 per musician!).
On Sunday it's an early supper concert, part of the Valpre Winter Music Series at Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, starting at 18h30. Couvert for this one will be R30, and of course you're invited to make the most of the excellent food at the Silvertree Restaurant, with non-diners welcome in the bar area. A 3 course meal will only set you back R90 or you can have the "supperclub bord kos" for R45 or soup & rolls for R25. Reservations recommended, call 021-762 9585.
Forthcoming performances: we'll be on at the G-Spot in Epping on Sunday 8 September, as well as a Sunday afternoon slot at the Fisherman's Cottage, Hermanus as part of the Whale Festival on Sunday 26 September.
Hope to see you at one of these ..
