Hanepoot Big Band: Woordfees Lang Tafel

Lang Tafel, Ryneveld Street, Stellenbosch
Thursday 3 March 2016, 19h00

The Hanepoot Big Band, led by trombonist, Jannie 'Hanepoot' van Tonder, is back (like the terminator).

After a 6-year hiatus, Hanepoot has been cajoled into getting the band back together (like the blues brothers) to perform at the opening of the Stellenbosch University's Woordfees.

Jannie Hanepoot moved to the Karoo town of Montagu in 2009, and the big band went into indefinite hibernation. At various points there have been talk of getting the band back together, and indeed when it finally happened, the enthusiastic response among musicians was confirmation of how sorely the band has been missed.

Although there are several other big bands, some permanent features, and others that come and go, in the Cape Town music scene, the Hanepoot Big Band's philosophy of playing only original material and new arrangements of lesser known SA Jazz tunes remains a rare specialty.

Music lovers who have been to their concerts in the past have been known to rave about the "superbly energetic indigenous jazz", featuring marabi, goema and swing tunes ... reviewers have referred to "uplifting events", "filled with energy" and "feeling life-affirmed". As usual the repertoire will feature SA Jazz compositions by Errol Dyers, Dudu Pukwana, Dollar Brand, and Zakes Nkosi as well as compositions of band member Douglas Armstrong.

For this iteration of the band Hanepoot has assembled some of the old crew, including the likes of trombonist Jasper Cook (pictured below), saxophonist Chris Tokalon, composer/trumpeter Douglas Armstrong, pianist George Werner, guitarist Bruce Muirhead, and John Ntsibilikwana on alto, but there will also be some new faces including various exciting up-and-coming Cape jazz musicians like trombonist Steven Sokuyeka, trumpeter Muneeb Hermans, and Didier Richards on lead alto.

The evening's entertainment will also feature the University of Stellenbosch Jazz band as well as the american trad jazz Johnny Cooper Big Band. Tickets for the lang tafel are available at http://online.computicket.com/web/event/lang_tafel/980057121
