Hanepoot Big Band
Helderberg Nature Reserve, Somerset West
Sunday 5 February 2017 -- 17h30

The Hanepoot Big Band, led by trombonist, Jannie 'Hanepoot' van Tonder, continues its comeback to the live music scene with a picnic concert at the Helderberg Nature Reserve on Sunday 5 February.

Although there are several other big bands around Cape Town, the Hanepoot Big Band is unique in that they only play original material and new arrangements of (mostly lesser known) SA Jazz.

This concert will also feature a new arrangement of an old Zakes Nkosi tune Zavolo, by well-known bassist Shaun Johannes, who will be joining the rhythm section as guest artist! Regular band members includes top musicians like trombonists Jasper Cook, composer/trumpeter Douglas Armstrong, pianist George Werner, guitarist Bruce Muirhead, and veteran John Ntsibilikwana as well as sailor Didier Richards on alto sax.

Music lovers who have been to their concerts in the past have been known to rave about the "superbly energetic indigenous jazz", featuring marabi, goema and swing tunes ... reviewers have referred to "uplifting events", "filled with energy" and "feeling life-affirmed". As usual the repertoire will feature SA Jazz compositions by Errol Dyers, Dudu Pukwana, Dollar Brand, and Zakes Nkosi as well as compositions of band member Douglas Armstrong.
