Hanepoot Big Band in Concert
Saturday 13 May 19h00, Montagu Museum
Sunday 14 May 16h00, Robertson Town Hall

Dassierock, with the generous help of Concerts SA, presents the Hanepoot Big Band in Concert, led by Montagu-based trombonist, Jannie 'Hanepoot' van Tonder, at the Montagu Museum on Saturday evening 13 May, and the Robertson Town Hall on Sunday afternoon 14 May.

The Hanepoot Big Band, consisting of 18 jazz musicians from around Cape Town, is unique in that they only play indigenous jazz, including some original compositions as well as their own arrangements of SA jazz classics.

Music lovers who have been to their concerts over the past 16 years have been known to rave about the energetic performances featuring marabi, goema and swing tunes ... reviewers referred to "uplifting events", "filled with energy" and "feeling life-affirmed" after HBB concerts. The repertoire includes compositions by Errol Dyers, Dudu Pukwana, Dollar Brand as well as band members Douglas Armstrong and Jannie Hanepoot himself. There will be several new arrangements of tunes by saxophonist Zakes Nkosi, an influential marabi composer who lived and performed with his band in Sophiatown in the 1950s, and this weekend's concerts will include the premiere performance of a brand new big band arrangement of a Caiphus Semenya classic called "Caution", which was first recorded by Hugh Masekela in 1971 on the album "The Union of South Africa" featuring Caiphus himself, Jonas Gwangwa and the famous Crusaders rhythm section in Los Angeles, California.

Band members include top musicians like veteran trombonist Jasper Cook, trumpeters Muneeb Hermans & Doug Armstrong, pianist George Werner, guitarist Bruce Muirhead, with Gugulethu veteran John Ntsibilikwana and Didier Richards on alto saxes. Jannie Hanepoot is well-known for his contribution as 'n member of Johannes Kerkorrel's "Gereformeerde Blues Band" and the African Jazz Pioneers.

The band will also present a free workshop at Nieuwe Horizon Community Hall in Ashbury at 11h00 on Saturday morning 13 May, anybody is welcome to attend, if you have an instrument bring it!

Saturday's concert at Montagu Museum starts at 19h00, and admission is R50. Tickets available at the door or book at the museum, your ticket includes a free glass of muscadel. Coffee and pastries will be available.

Sunday's concert at Robertson Town Hall starts at 16h00, and admission is R30. Tickets available at the door.
