Hanepoot Big Band at the Muizenberg Jazz Festival
Friday 13 October 21h30, Masque Theatre
The Hanepoot Big Band is proud to have been invited to be part of the impressive line-up at the first ever Muizenberg Jazz Festival, which takes place at the Masque Theatre in Muizenberg on 13th and 14th October 2017. The Jazz Festival is part of the Muizenberg Festival, a two-week long celebration happening in and around the village of Muizenberg
The Hanepoot Big Band is a diverse group of some 18 Capetown-based musicians, known for playing a variety of indigenous South African jazz styles, mostly based in the ghoema and mbaqanga tradition.
This latest version of the HBB boasts some new blood, and includes remarkable musicians like veteran trombonist Jasper Cook (also ex African Jazz Pioneers), trumpeters Muneeb Hermans & Doug Armstrong, pianist George Werner, guitarist Bruce Muirhead, drummer Kurt Bowers, with Gugulethu veteran John Ntsibilikwana and Didier Richards on alto saxes. The band ranges from 21 to 83 years in age (!!) and hails from all over the mother city: Athlone, Botrivier, Bergvliet, Constantia, Delft, Grassy Park, Gugulethu, Hanover park, Kenilworth, Manenberg, Montagu, Pinelands, Retreat, Scarborough, Woodstock and Wynberg!
Music lovers who have been to their concerts over the past 16 years have been known to rave about the energetic performances ... reviewers referred to "uplifting events", "filled with energy" and "feeling life-affirmed" after HBB concerts. The repertoire includes compositions by Errol Dyers, Dudu Pukwana, Dollar Brand as well as band members Douglas Armstrong and Jannie Hanepoot himself. There are new arrangements of tunes by saxophonist Zakes Nkosi, an influential marabi composer who lived and performed with his band in Sophiatown in the 1950s, and a brand new big band arrangement of a Caiphus Semenya classic called "Caution", which was first recorded by Hugh Masekela in 1971 on the album "The Union of South Africa" featuring Caiphus himself, Jonas Gwangwa and the famous Crusaders rhythm section in Los Angeles, California.
Friday's concert starts at 21h30, and admission is R100. Tickets now available at Webtickets. Other acts included in the line-up are Bokani Dyer, McCoy Mrubata Band, Buddy Wells Quartet, Ramon Alexander
